Top 5 Ideas for a Fun & Affordable Homecation

Published on 6 July 2020, Kimberly Francisco

Itching for a vacay? Homecation is the new staycation. It is a time to unplug, use up some of that annual leave you were saving for the holiday you can no longer take, and spend some time having fun at home.

Homecation simply means a vacation at home. It lets families make memories while keeping safe at home and saving on some cash that they might typically spend on a holiday overseas.

Although restrictions are slowly easing across the world, travelling abroad is still limited. With time on your hands and not many places to go, why not spice up your life with these fun and affordable homecation ideas.

1. Declutter your home

If you are looking to spark some joy in your life, it’s time to stop watching Mystic Pop-up Bar on Netflix and start decluttering your home. It’s a well-known fact that when you clear up your space, you clear up your mind too.

Discard unwanted, broken and outdated items. You can do it the Marie Kondo way by starting with your clothes first, followed by your books, papers, komono (aka miscelleaneous), and finally, mementos. If you have trouble deciding to keep it or bin it, ask yourself: “Does it spark joy?”

You will be surprised by the sense of relief and happiness you find once you are done decluttering.

Fun for: Individuals, Families

2. Have an Arts & Crafts day

Break out your inner child and bring on your creativity. Turn your day into one that even Picasso would be proud of.

Organize a painting session over Zoom with your friends. Get everyone to follow a picture or do it freestyle. Show off your masterpieces to each other at the end of the session.

If painting isn’t for you, why not try learning a new craft instead? Find out what materials you need and prep a space in your home beforehand. Get your whole family together to learn how to do it. Some awesome DIY channels you can follow on YouTube are Kin Community and SoCraftastic.

Fun for: All!

3. Spa day at home

The best part of vacations are those days you get to pamper yourself at the spa. So why not turn your homecation into a spa day?

Grab some scented candles, dim the lights and prepare your essentials – face mask, body scrub, bath bombs – whatever that helps you relax. (Pro tip: If you have sensitive skin, try Speak for some vegan, cruelty-free beauty products)

Change into your bathrobe and put on some relaxing spa music, like a curated playlist from Spotify. Remove all distractions and take a couple of hours to unplug and relax. Your mind, body and soul will thank you for it later.

Fun for: Individuals, Couples

4. Wine and Dine

You don’t have to go out to a restaurant for a fancy ambience. Get your family involved in setting up the dining room to feel like your favourite restaurant. Serve up a three-course meal and enjoy time with your loved ones.

With all that extra cash you saved spending time at home in lockdown, you can even use it to indulge in a fancy meal. Order in some food. They have some great options on apps like GrabFood, Deliveroo and FoodPanda.

If you prefer cooking it yourself, look up some cool recipes online. Celebrate with some wine or if you don’t drink alcohol or have kids, pair your meal with some sparkling juice or mocktails. (Pro tip: See The Straits Wine Company’s extensive selection for all your wine needs, including zero alcohol wines. Another pro tip: Use Split payments when you checkout with The Straits Wine Company.)

Fun for: Couples, Families

5. Games Night

Why not turn your homecation into a night of some fun, family-friendly competition?

Form groups and play charades or Pictionary. Bring out board game classics like Monopoly. Or try these fun card games with a local twist – like Limpeh Says or The Lepak Game.

Assign points and the one with the most points at the end of the night wins a prize. Make it a good one to encourage competition, but remember to lay down some ground rules (like: remember you are family at the end of the day) – because you don’t want family fun to turn into a family feud. Complete it all with some party hats and snacks.

Fun for: Families
