Founders of Royale Ergonomics, Sin Hong Joo and Sin Koon Leng, kickstarted their venture on Carousell offering reupholstery services for gaming chairs. What they didn’t anticipate was it snowballing into something bigger.
The pair of brothers started out simply wanting to repair their own gaming chair and decided to use the same grade of leather that was used for car seats. They were so pleased with the quality and finish of the reupholstery that they were eager to share it with others too.
As the enquiries rolled in on Carousell, word began to spread from satisfied customers about their unique offering and personable customer service. Soon enough, customers were urging them to start their own business, which was how Royale Ergonomics was born.
“We did not realise what a huge issue leather peeling was and in the past year and a half that we started Royale, we have already repaired about 700 to 800 chairs,” Hong Joo shares. By filling this gap in the market, they inadvertently set their business in motion.
In less than a year, Royale Ergonomics has already made quite a name for itself among the gaming community. It was the official chair of Anime Festival Asia 2019, where they provided other event sponsors with customisable, white-label chairs. It was also the partner brand at two prominent events in Singapore last year – the PVP Esports tournament and the inaugural Comic Con Singapore.
So what makes Royale the perfect gaming chair that combines both comfort and design?
Royale Ergonomics is the first and only brand in Singapore that uses automotive-grade materials to manufacture their gaming chairs. The idea was inspired by their father who is a veteran in the automotive manufacturing industry. From the type of leather to the foam they use, their materials are made following the same ISO standards for cars.
While humidity in Singapore means your leather chair peels and cracks faster, the same is not true for car leather seats. At least not for a long while. For this reason, Royale chairs last four times longer than the average gaming chair which starts to peel after the first couple of years.
Automotive-grade foam is also more durable. Chair manufacturing companies typically use the same kind of foam that is used for insulating walls which is not as long-lasting. As it wears out, so does your comfort. So buying a Royale chair actually gives you more bang for your buck in the long run.
Some common complaints that Royale has heard from gamers are backaches and bad sitting posture due to the uncomfortable curvature of their chairs, non-adjustable headrests, among others. That is why Royale places a specific focus on developing chairs based on research and development in ergonomics. It is the secret to their comfortable chairs.
Based on R&D, Royale has developed a lumbar support that encourages a straighter sitting posture. It also found that having a height adjustment feature is important for good posture as gamers should be sitting with their feet firmly planted to the ground.
For further comfort, their chairs are installed with a 4D armrest. It is a multi-directional, adjustable feature that helps you to align your wrist and elbows parallelly to the table, relieving your shoulders from pressure.
These are some of the components that make for ergonomically-sound chairs that their customers really appreciate.
Whether you are playing games or doing work, you know that the chair material adds to your comfort. Royale has four types to choose from - fabric, faux leather, genuine leather and Italian Napa leather.
While customers vary in terms of their preference, it is Italian Napa leather that is the surprising top pick among them. “We never ever push any of our customers toward a specific material but most of them end up getting Napa leather because they think it is quite a good bargain. It is very inaccessible to the public and also very expensive but because of the economies of scale that we have, we are able to offer it to our customers at a much lower price,” Hong Joo reveals.
It has a smoother and softer finish than genuine leather, and is considered a luxury material as it is found in cars like Bentleys and Porsches. “So when you are using one of our Napa leather chairs, you are literally sitting on the same kind of leather found in very high-end cars,” quips Hong Joo when asked about its allure.
Nope, we are not referring to the Tik Tok meme. Instead, we are talking about being able to customise your own gaming chair to your liking. When you buy a chair from Royale, you can choose the fabric, colour and add a logo if you wish to.
This has attracted a lot of B2B customers, which is something Hong Joo did not dream of. “Before, these companies had many different chairs, which gave their office a messy look. After working with us, they were able to incorporate their logo and brand colours into their chairs and the end result is something that looks very professional,” Hong Joo shares. In fact, their B2B orders are becoming so popular that they are slowly superseding their orders of gaming chairs.
Before developing their own brand, the brothers initially worked with other businesses to obtain their materials for reupholstery. However, it was more expensive and harder for them to control the quality of the parts that they were getting.
Starting their own chair manufacturing company enabled them to work directly with suppliers and cut out the middlemen. This has helped establish a more viable business model while making it more affordable for its customers.
Singapore is the home of gamers with brands like Razer and Aftershock being birthed right here. Royale Ergonomics fits into the scene comfortably as another “made in Singapore” brand that will complete your gaming experience through its comfortable and luxe gaming chair designs.
