Launching in waves from April 2020 to early 2021, The Straits Finery’s latest jewellery series is a carefully curated selection featuring designs that reflect echoes of the ocean. Aptly named Ebb & Flow, it is a thoughtful testament to Mother Earth, particularly the sea and everything in it, and communicates something very close to its founders’ hearts – the environment.
Growing up by the sea along the straits of Malacca, Amira Yahaya and Foo Chia Chern, always held an interest in the environment, doing what they could to save it. This series allows them to share these sentiments with their customers, hoping it holds a similar meaning for them too.
The Ebb & Flow series is their sixth collection launched since they started their business in 2015. “With every collection, we start with a theme. We don’t just throw a whole bunch of designs together and try and work out a collection out of it,” Chern reveals. In this way, they hope to encourage their customers to thoughtfully choose each piece they buy with as much care and attention as they put into designing them.
In this ocean-inspired series, each collection is called a wave and features only a few, select pieces of earrings, necklaces and bracelets that are specially designed, picked out and put together by Amira and Chern.
There is a story to every piece. So by launching it in waves, it gives customers time to ponder and really understand the story behind each wave and what each piece represents, without feeling overwhelmed by too many options.
Minimalistic, versatile and personal
Most of its jewellery are made of 14-karat gold, a light but sturdy metal, which creates a “barely there” look that perfectly fits into your everyday style.
Their high-quality, minimalistic jewellery are meant to be timeless pieces that complement your individual style and personality for years to come, and not just for a hot moment in fashion.
They initially started out their business creating stackable rings, just 1-millimetre thick. Because their rings are so thin, simple and elegant in design, it gives you room to play if you wear a few different rings at a time. By stacking them, you can create new and different styles each time you wear them and also highly personalized to your liking.
Ebb & Flow: The First Three Waves
Ebb & Flow will be launched in six waves in total. Its first two collections were released in April this year, with the third wave set to hit shores in August.
The next three collections will be released towards the end of 2020 through to early 2021.
Just like a shoal of fish, this collection reflects how we are made up of different individuals that are stronger and better when we come together.
Similarly, the pieces in this collection come in differing shapes, sizes and textures. For example, the individual pendants of the Shoal necklace differ in size and shape, yet together, they make a very fine and elegant piece of jewellery.
Coincidentally, Shoal has become uncannily representative of the times we are living in. “It was very apt during the pandemic because we all really did need to work together to overcome this, [like staying home and putting our masks on], but of course, we all express ourselves in very different ways, but we’re all managing for each other,” Chern elaborates.
This unique collection features just one ring - the Nautilus ring. Their version of a statement ring, it is bolder in design than their usual pieces but still retains its minimalist essence.
Its design is inspired by the nautilus, a living fossil that dates back to prehistoric times. The curves and grooves on the ring resemble the hardy chambers of the nautilus’ shell that not only make for an interesting pattern but take after the style of jewellery worn in ancient Greece.
Just as the nautilus moves from chamber to chamber as it grows, the collection represents progress and growth while holding on to the little reminders or ‘chambers’ of time past that have made you who you are – both good and bad.
Launching in August, Reef is inspired by the curves and textures of coral reefs and each piece in the collection takes on a life of its own.
While a coral reef has lumps and bumps and no discernible shape, there is still beauty in its imperfections. Likewise, you’ll find beauty in the wavy lines of the Coral ring and admire the imperfect beauty of the slightly mismatched shapes of the earrings in this set.
The idea behind Reef is to remind us of the function that coral reefs play in the protection of our land from the dangerous, crashing waves. In a way, it causes us to think about the oceans and our impact on it. As Amira puts it, “Just like Mother Earth looks after you, you should always look after her.”
Founders’ Favourites
“It’s so hard! It’s like picking a child,” Amira laments while Chern agrees, saying that they can’t do that. So, we’ll call these picks their ‘flavour of the week’ instead.
“The Shoal earrings don’t dangle when I have to go out and put on and take out my mask, and it doesn’t get caught in the string.”Amira’s current picks: Bamboo Ring & Shoal Earring
“I think because all our pieces are generally all quite thin, [the Nautilus ring is] quite nice and different from our usual."Chern’s current picks: Nautilus ring
